Emerald is for planet Mercury, according to Indian or Vedic astrology. Wednesday is the day for emeralds. In west emerald is for the month of May.

It is called Markat in Sanskrit, Panna in Hindi and Bengali, Neelu paanu in Gujrati. From its Persian name Zamurrad that traveled to Greek as Smaragdos, then to Latin as Smaralda through common Roman name Esmaralde and finally it took the name emerald in modern English. It is a soft stone and its hardness is between 7.5 to 8 and specific gravity of 2.7. Refractive index of a natural emerald varies from 1 .56 to 1.59. It is a  composition of beryllium, aluminum and silicon oxides.

Main sources of emerald are Columbia, Zambia, Brazil, Russia, Afghanistan-Pakistan and India.

Emeralds are cut in different varieties. Generally transparent and cleaner quality emerald roughs are cut as cut stones. Opaque and inclusive stones are cut as cabochons, drops and beads. Emeralds are also engraved.

  Jaipur is the main cutting and polishing center for emeralds.
